nucleareurope participates in Nordic Nuclear Forum

On 26 May, nucleareurope Director General Emmanuel Brutin participated in the Nordic Nuclear Forum, organised in Stockholm by FinNuclear. The event brought together high-level policymakers – including Swedish Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch and Finnish Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala – as well as global and Nordic industrial stakeholders.

As part of the event, Emmanuel intervened in a panel session entitled “nuclear energy for a secure north – policy pathways, public trust, and energy resilience”, to discuss the European policy framework for nuclear, investment plans and supply chain.

Emmanuel opened his intervention by noting that installed nuclear capacity in the EU is set to grow from around 100 Gigawatts (GW) today to close to 150GW by 2050. He stressed that this represents significant investments across the whole nuclear value chain, and that an enabling policy framework will have a key role to play in supporting the industry to deliver on those investments.

“Through a long-term, technology neutral policy framework, the EU can create the enabling conditions for the development of the whole nuclear value chain, and thus strengthen the continent’s energy security and competitiveness” stated Emmanuel, pointing to the recent publication of nucleareurope’s Policy Action Plan.

Emmanuel specifically highlighted 5 key areas where policy action can make a strong difference: a long-term vision to stimulate net-zero with nuclear; an equitable financial framework; an accelerated regulatory framework; enhanced security of supply and support to the European nuclear supply chain.

Concluding his intervention, Emmanuel stressed the fact that the European nuclear sector is one of the few net-zero value chains almost entirely based in Europe, and encouraged actions to support Europe-based supply chain actors.

nucleareurope has just released a tool which gives insights into just how substantial the European nuclear supply chain is, check it out here.
