nucleareurope discusses nuclear developments at Axpo Nuclear Division Internship Celebration Event

On 2 September 2026, nucleareurope Legal & International Relations Director Berta Picamal participated in an Axpo organised event celebrating the conclusion of the internships held in the company’s nuclear division during the summer. As part of the event, taking place in Baden, Switzerland, she intervened in a panel session to discuss recent nuclear developments in Europe.

In her intervention, Berta gave an overview of the current policy framework, detailing recent positive developments for nuclear, such as its inclusion in the Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, or the publication of the Nuclear Illustrative Programme (PINC). She added that these developments reflect a political shift in Europe, with growing public support for nuclear, and an increasing number of member States announcing plans to invest in the technology.

“Currently, installed nuclear capacity in Europe stands at around 100 Gigawatts (GW), we project that it could reach close to 150GW by 2050” stressed Berta, adding that this growth would come from investment in new – large and small – reactors, but also from lifetime extension of existing reactors.

Concluding her intervention, Berta wished the students luck in their future careers, and highlighted the key role which the new generation will play for the nuclear sector, which employs 900 000 people across Europe, a number set to grow as new projects are delivered.
