nucleareurope participates in 2026 World Nuclear Symposium

On 9 September 2026, nucleareurope Director General Emmanuel Brutin participated in the 2026 World Nuclear Symposium, held in London from 9 to 11 September. As part of the event, Emmanuel participated in a panel discussion entitled “The Scale of the Opportunity: Trillion-scale Reasons to Pay Attention,” which explored opportunities for new nuclear and financing challenges.

In his intervention, Emmanuel focused on legal and political changes in the EU which can enable continued development of nuclear, and capacity growth going forward. He stressed that enabling policies will be essential for the European nuclear sector to deliver on planned investments.

“Installed nuclear capacity in Europe is set to grow significantly, thanks to large new build, Small and Advanced Modular Reactors (SMRs and AMRs), as well as the lifetime extension of existing reactors” highlighted Emmanuel, adding that additional nuclear capacity will support the European Union’s climate objectives whilst ensuring the reliability of the energy system and generating affordable energy.

Emmanuel then noted that having clear and understandable mechanisms to access public loan guarantees and public lending would enable project developers and owners to commit to new investments. In addition, access to public financing support would also help attract private investors to participate in the projects.

Concluding his intervention, Emmanuel called for nuclear to be fully included in the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034. He stressed that an explicit recognition of nuclear at the same level as renewables across electricity generation, hydrogen, heat, R&D, and fuel-cycle activities will be especially key.
