nucleareurope visits nuclear facilities in the Netherlands
On 19 and 20 January 2026, nucleareurope Director General Emmanuel Brutin and Legal and International Relations Director Berta Picamal travelled to the Netherlands to visit three nuclear sites: the Central Organisation For Radioactive Waste (Covra), the Borssele nuclear power plant, and Urenco’s Almelo enrichment facility.
The visit allowed Emmanuel and Berta to discuss developments with stakeholders representing different stages of the nuclear value chain. During the first day, the visit of Covraa, in presence of the facility’s Director General Jan Boelen and Strategy and Policy Advisor Veronique Vasseur, provided the opportunity to explore radioactive waste management processes, both for intermediate and high-level waste.
In the afternoon, Emmanuel and Berta visited the Borssele nuclear power plant, operated by EPZ, with its Chief Financial Officer Bram-Paul Jobse. They discussed the activities of the power plant, as well as plans for the development of nuclear in the Netherlands.
The second day was dedicated to the visit of the Almelo enrichment facility, operated by Urenco Netherlands. The company’s Managing Director Ad Louter and Netherlands and EU Government Affairs Director Hidde Baars presented the activities conducted on the site, and outlined plans for its future expansion. Emmanuel and Berta then went on a tour of the enrichment facility and the stable isotopes plant.
The variety of the sites visited highlighted the versatility of the activities conducted in European nuclear facilities, and the strong European base of the industry’s value chain. It further showcases the role of nuclear in supporting energy sovereignty in Europe.
