nucleareurope discusses EU energy system at “The Future is Nuclear” conference

On 7 September 2026, nucleareurope Director General Emmanuel Brutin participated in an event entitled “The Future is Nuclear”, organised in Slovenia by Member of the European Parliament Matej Tonin.

As part of the event, Emmanuel participated in a panel discussion on nuclear energy trends across Europe. He specifically discussed the role of nuclear in the energy system, the post-2030 climate framework as well as the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034.

“Nuclear is Europe’s largest single source of decarbonised electricity in Europe. As we move towards a net-zero future, nuclear will be critical to ensure faster decarbonisation, greater system stability and affordable energy costs” stressed Emmanuel, adding that technology neutral policies are needed to encourage the deployment of all clean technologies.

Emmanuel specifically noted that as the EU moves towards its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, compared to 1990 levels, it needs to implement a framework which incentivises investment in all net-zero sources of energy by introducing an overarching clean energy target, rather than technology specific targets.

Concluding his intervention, Emmanuel called for the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034 to fully include nuclear. He stressed that access to EU funds will be critical to help attract private investors to participate in nuclear projects.
