Nucleareurope welcomes Net-Zero Industry Act provisional deal

Feb 7, 2024 | Press Release

Brussels, 7 February 2024: nucleareurope welcomes decision to officially include nuclear technologies under the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) according to the provisional deal reached between the Council and the Parliament. As highlighted by nucleareurope throughout the process, nuclear is an important EU industrial sector which supports economic growth and job creation. Furthermore, it plays a key role in ensuring energy sovereignty and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“We are delighted to see the EU put nuclear on an equal footing with other net-zero technologies, such as renewables” states Yves Desbazeille, nucleareurope Director General. “The goal of the NZIA is to strengthen Europe’s net-zero technology products manufacturing ecosystem, something that we fully support.  Furthermore, it is also expected to boost the industrial deployment of net-zero technologies needed to achieve EU’s climate goals and to reinforce Europe’s leadership in industrial green technologies.

According to the agreement, Member States who support nuclear as part of their energy mix can consider such technologies as ‘Strategic Projects’.  This is expected to bring benefits to the nuclear supply chain.
