nucleareurope participates in Women in Nuclear – Spain roundtable

On 28 May 2025, nucleareurope Legal and International Relations Director Berta Picamal participated in a roundtable on the role of nuclear in Europe’s energy transition, held in the framework of Spain’s Women in Nuclear (WiN) regional event. Participating remotely, Berta joined a diverse panel of voices committed to exploring the future of nuclear energy through a lens of collaboration, innovation, and inclusive leadership.

The roundtable brought together professionals from across the nuclear sector to reflect on how nuclear energy can support Europe’s decarbonisation goals, while also addressing challenges of public perception, regulatory complexity, and the need for diverse leadership in shaping the sector’s future.

In her intervention, Berta highlighted recent developments on nuclear at the European level, noting that an increasing number of member States are announcing plans to continue using or invest in new nuclear capacity. She noted that based on National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) projections and recent announcements, installed nuclear capacity in the EU could reach over 140 Gigawatt by 2050.

“National policies reflect a positive trend in perception of nuclear across Europe, which is also translated in the European Parliament and European Council” added Berta, calling for technology neutral European policies which respect the right for each member State to choose its own energy mix.

The session was marked by a dynamic and personal tone, with Berta drawing on her experience as a woman who spent years navigating the intersections of law, policy, and energy advocacy at the European level.

WiN Global plays a prominent role in promoting both nuclear technology and gender equality worldwide. With over 35,000 members and representation in more than 145 countries, WiN continues to advocate for the environmental benefits of nuclear energy and the inclusion of women and underrepresented groups in the nuclear field.
